Curved terraces and steps from the garden to house
The middle paved terrace is used for relaxed seating, with curved rattan sofas fitting into the arc of the retaining wall.
The brief for this large country garden was to extend the paved area into a large level terrace adjacent to the house, providing flexible space for family gatherings and parties. The new layout offers options for seating and eating in different parts of the garden. The vista from the house is an important aspect of the design, with outdoor lighting to ensure that the views of the garden can be enjoyed both day and night.
In keeping with the Arts and Crafts house, and responding to the contours of the garden, a large semi-circular paved terrace provides the entertaining space required, with easy access to the kitchen. Steps with bespoke bull-nosed edging lead to a more intimate seating area and the garden beyond. The existing crazy paved Yorkstone terrace was recycled on site and used to face the retaining wall. Ornamental grasses and tall herbaceous perennials in the terraced beds link with the planting in the rest of the garden. Exterior lighting around the steps and terraces, together with mood lighting among the trees and shrubs give a new dimension to the garden.
