Where has the Summer gone?

It’s hard to believe that we are already approaching the end of August. How time flies where you’re having fun!
June saw a glorious spell of hot weather just as we were undertaking the planting up of a garden project we have been working on for 2 years now. The photo shows Louise and I discussing the planting sitting on the newly laid terrace. We normally avoid planting at this time of the year but luckily for us and our clients the weather broke and the rain of July helped the plants to thrive.
June also saw the very successful opening of Louise’s garden as part of the Walton open gardens. 300 people visited the garden and admired the design and planting – and the day was blessed with glorious weather. However, after the event, Louise has said “never again” – much time having been given over by her and the family to have everything looking its best. Perhaps we can twist her arm!
July and Aug can be a quiet time for us but this year we have been steadily busy throughout. Louise and family jetted off to Thailand and had a fabulous time trekking in the jungle, diving, swimming and shopping! I held the fort and Louise returned invigorated and full of ideas for designing gardens full of eastern promise! (Watch this space!)
Mid Aug saw the installation of a Gardenmakers designed water feature – commissioned back in May. It has been long in the gestation, but we are thrilled with the result, creating that key focal point on a new terrace that completes the garden. Lit at night it adds a different dimension again, proving how effective lighting can add so much to a design project giving the completed garden added interest.
As summer rolls to its end, we are already making plans for autumn planting. Projects recently completed will be planted up in Sept and Oct while others that are still at the design stage will be planted in the spring and autumn next year. I am leaving Louise to hold the fort while I dash to the west coast of Scotland for a week of sailing in wild wind and weather – as I write this the tail end of hurricane Bill is heading that way! I know that by the time I return it will feel like Autumn is here already – but who knows perhaps we will have an Indian summer – aren’t we promised this every year!
