Persian inspiration in Mughal fort gardens, Jaipur, India

Posted on 14th Feb, 2017

The formal courtyard gardens at the Amber Fort, Jaipur are a living example of the influences of Persian garden design in the Mughal Fort.  A geometric grid of limestone clad pathways forms the layout, filled in with Jasmins and tightly clipped evergreen shrubs.

Beyond the fort ramparts, built in a manmade lake is the Saffron Garden, designed for the cultivation of saffron.  Unfortunately, the furnace heat of Rajasthan summers thwarted saffron but we are left today with the beautiful feat of human endeavour constructed in the 16th Century.
