Gardenmakers was formed in 2003 by professional garden designers Louise Cummins and Caroline De Lane Lea, who trained in Garden Design at the English Gardening School based in the Chelsea Physic Garden, and both graduated with distinctions.
The practice benefits from the wide range of skills and experience both Caroline and Louise bring from their previous professional lives. Caroline followed a Degree in Geography with 15 years working at Christies auction house, ultimately as Operations Director at Christies Education. Through this work, she brings a broad knowledge of art and architecture along with considerable project management experience.
Using her Degree in French and Portuguese, Louise lived and worked overseas for many years, where she developed a deep appreciation of Mediterranean plants and planting schemes for dry climates. Returning to the UK, she continued to build on her passion for plants, designing and planting her own and friends' gardens which gave her a solid platform for becoming a garden designer.
The Practice places particular emphasis on listening carefully to the client's brief to gain a clear understanding about how they wish to use their outdoor space. Considered design solutions are proposed which will provide a strong visual connection with the property along with a sense of place. Careful attention to detail, along with exquisite planting are also key to Gardenmakers' approach, and central to the classic modern garden designs they create.
In addition to private and commercial commissions, Caroline and Louise have been involved with the planting of seven Gold Medal winning Show Gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. In 2007 they created their own garden in the Chic Garden category and it was awarded a Silver medal.
In 2015, Gardenmakers was nominated as Finalist in the annual Society of Garden Designers Awards.
