Brief: A new extension to the house looks onto a forgotten corner of this large family garden. Views from the drawing room, mainly used during the evening, needed to be improved and a distinct area for quiet contemplation, away from the main play area in the garden was also required.
Design: Broad grass steps retained with recycled steel edging emphasize the level change, creating a feature out of the gentle slope with ground shaping.
Outdoor lighting brings the garden to life at night. A multi-stemmed Cherry tree is lit from above, emphasizing its bark and architectural form, and beyond this, the green canopy of a group of Dicksonia antartica (Tree Ferns) are highlighted with spiked uplights.
Buxus (Box) ball and ornamental grass parterres planted either side of the steps give year round structure. Narcissus, Camassia and Tulips add dashes of seasonal colour to the longer flowering Geraniums and evergreen grasses.
The sweep of turfed steps leads to a secluded seating area with a curved Oak bench encircled with freestanding climbing Hydrangea. A winter focal point of Witchhazel provides fiery red flowers in the depths of January.
