Brief: To revitalize the back garden of this recently refurbished Arts & Crafts house. The clients required areas for dining and entertaining, summer seating space, a large lawn for the family to play on and well stocked borders. The refurbishment of the house created a new courtyard viewed from several rooms – the clients asked that this key vista be addressed in the design.
Design: Uneven levels were smoothed out to providing practical level changes to energize the space around this house. A sandstone terrace leads out at a level threshold with the bi-fold doors from the conservatory. Yorkstone from the existing patio is recycled on site and used for the retaining walls and step risers. Steps with LED lights set in lead down to a second, larger dining terrace and the lawn.
A bespoke spun steel water bowl sited in the new courtyard provides the key focal point. Built-in lighting gives an extra dimension at night.
An allee of Olive trees planted in sandstone sett squares leads to a trellised seating area creating a secluded sunny space separate from the main terrace. Fragrant, evergreen jasmine scrambles over the trellis. Wrapping around the garden are generous borders planted in tones of reds through to pink with accents of purple and orange. The planting is designed to bring interest and colour to the garden throughout the changing seasons.
